Officials in Algiers say Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s wife Safiya, two sons, a daughter and their children have crossed the border into Algeria.
In a statement, Algeria’s foreign ministry said the family has been received on humanitarian grounds.
The statement said the United Nations Chief, Ban Ki Moon, the security council and Senior Libyan Rebel Leader, Mahmud Jibril have been informed.
Colonel Maummar Gaddafi and two of his sons, Saadi and Seif Al-Islam are reported to be in the town of Bani Walid, south of the Libyan capital Tripoli.
The Lybian rebels’ national transitional council said they want the Gaddafi family members back in Libya.
Meanwhile, the Malian government has said it will welcome the Libyan leader in their country.
