Bindura-based Freda Rebecca gold mine has retrenched at least 26 workers as part of a restructuring exercise meant to optimise the business but workers are contesting the move, citing violation of the Labour Act.

According to a notice of intention to retrench issued to affected workers on 31 January, positions of employees being retrenched have become redundant while Freda Rebecca Gold Mine is restructuring in order to optimise the business. 

Group Chief Executive Officer for ASA Resources which owns 85 percent of Freda Rebecca Gold Mine Mr Toi Munganyi confirmed 30 workers were being retrenched although he could not shed more detail.

However, four workers have since been recalled to work while the rest are contesting their retrenchment citing the Works Council and the retrenchment board were not informed while retrenchment papers were served a day after the notice of intention to retrench in violation of Section 12 C of the Labour Act.

Through their lawyers the workers have approached the Labour Court, arguing adequate action was not taken to avoid to retrenchment.

Freda Rebecca Gold Mine is one of the large scale gold producers in Zimbabwe.
