A group of former soccer legends from around the world led by ex-Arsenal, Real Madrid striker and Brazilian international Julio Baptista arrived in the country today in an initiative aimed at promoting sports tourism.

The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) who organised the tour of the former soccer greats received the former footballers at the Robert Mugabe International Airport.

The Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry is intensifying efforts to rebrand the country by engaging renowned leaders who are in a position to influence opinion about Zimbabwe image which for a long time has been negatively portrayed.

As part of its national tourism sector strategy, the Tourism Ministry is also determined to grow tourism through sports tourism.

The delegation also proceeded to a local hotel where a memorandum of understanding has been signed between the ZTA and the world club legends which will culimate into a match to be played on June 08 between the World Cup legends and Warriors legends at the Giant National Sports Stadium.

Last year in November, Warriors legends played against Barcelona legends, a match which attracted tens of thousands of supporters at the National Sports Stadium.

The match to be played in June will see the likes of ex-Brazilian defender Roberto Carlos, Barcelona’s legendary defender Carlos Puyol and former France international Robert Pires taking part.

Sports tourism is a growing tourist phenomenon and is the nexus of growing tourism.
