Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Cde Prisca Mupfumira says over 200 000 tonnes of grain are still available for the grain mitigation programme following the poor harvests experienced in the 2015-2016 cropping season.

In an interview with the ZBC News in Darwendale, Minister Mupfumira said the feeding programmes is going on smoothly and will continue until the end of May in anticipation of a bumper harvest.

In the last several months since the introduction of the food mitigation programme, some 850 000 households have benefitted from the grain with President Robert Mugabe saying no one should perish of hunger irrespective of political affiliation.

According to Minister Mupfumira, the grain mitigation scheme which was triggered by drought in the 2015-2016 season also benefitted able bodied people under the food for work programme, after prioritising the vulnerable groups.

With the introduction of the command agriculture and the Presidential Inputs Scheme, the challenge to grain deficit could become a thing of the past if the programmes are sustained for some time.
