walter mzembi 01-02-11.jpgTourism and Hospitality Industry Minister, Cde Walter Mzembi says Zimbabweans who intend to benefit from the indigenisation and economic empowerment programme should wait for policy direction through recommendations made by the sectoral committee on Tourism and Hospitality Industry.

The call by Minister Mzembi follows discord in the media about the Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment Act in relation to the tourism and hospitality industry.

Cde Mzembi said there is need for policy direction as far as the issue is concerned.

“We are engaging into dialogue with relevant ministries so as to come up with the actual position that will be later taken to cabinet for guidance,” confirmed Minister Mzembi.

Cde Mzembi said tourism thrives under a peaceful environment and hence the need for all Zimbabweans to maintain such peace so that the country continues to be the destination of choice for tourists the world over.

Some media reports have indicated that some Zimbabweans are taking over hospitality infrastructure under the guise of indigenisation before policy direction from cabinet.

Tourism is one of the major key economic drivers and last year, it wrecked in US$800 million last year and prospects are high that it will contribute 15% of the Gross Domestic Produce (GDP) this year.
