As the nation mobilises resources to assist the down-graded Cyclone Dineo flood victims in Tsholotsho, it has emerged that more than 90 percent of villagers in that province do not have birth documents.

Most people in Tsholotsho don’t have birth documents, an issue that renders them technically non-existent.

This came out during a briefing by the Tsholotsho Civil Protection Department on challenges that are affecting the community.

It has been noted that on verifying with the national data base of birth records, 490 out of 619 people did not have any birth records.

Tsholotsho North legislator Professor Jonathan Moyo said the issue is a wake-up call for the nation on the plight of people who urgently need birth documents, saying the number could be more.

The issue of birth documents has been raised before by Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko who said there is a need to address these challenges, especially those in Matabeleland and Midlands provinces.

Cde Mphoko who heads the Organ of Reconciliation and National Healing said people with no birth records must be assisted to get them while those whose relatives died must be issued with death certificates.
