Five people, among them two police officers, have been sentenced to four months in prison each after being convicted of assaulting a journalist over adultery allegations.

The convicted include two police officers; Penelock Majonhi (41) and Everson Marozva (33), two members of the Zimbabwe National Army, Hope Mwaipa (33) and Joachim Runyanga (35) as well as a Mutare Municipal Officer  – Saul Tomu (53).

The five were convicted of assault and kidnapping after they teamed up to kidnap and assault Clayton Masekesa, accussing him of having an affair with Tomu’s girlfriend.

Mutare regional magistrate Mrs Loyce Mukunyatse slapped the five with a four month prison term each with an option of 500 Zimbawean dollar fine each.

Prosecutor Tirivanhu Mutyasira proved that the five handcuffed Masekesa and assaulted him with baton stick and open arms after finding him at Tomu’s house with his girlfriend.

They also poured water on Masekesa before ordering him roll over in mud, while recording the act.

Masekesa sustained injuries and reported the matter to the police, leading to the five’s arrest.
