The First Lady, Cde Auxillia Mnangagwa has donated two and a half tonnes of rice and 300 litres of cooking oil to the elderly in Bulawayo.
Upon realising that the elderly women cannot compete with the younger generation in income generation to cater for their needs, Cde Mnangagwa has donated food stuffs that will assist them in their daily living.
The Minister of Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development, Cde Sithembiso Nyoni spoke during the donation ceremony, saying she had come to assure the elderly that the First Lady cares for them.
She added that the First Lady’s donation follows a promise she was made during the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair.
The minister also took time to engage the elderly community on issues that directly affect them such as ill treatment at clinics and hospitals, little pension funds and eviction from their own houses.
She promised to work towards curbing such anomalies and to meet the Bulawayo City Council to talk about some of these issues.
Even though the donation was meant for women only, some men benefited too as it was sufficient for all.
