67 000 grams of tobacco seeds have been sold as farmers gear for the 2018/19 cropping season.

According to the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board, the 67 000 grams of tobacco seed, which the Tobacco Research Board and the Zimbabwe Seed Trade Association have sold, is sufficient to cover 11 000 hectares of the golden leaf.

This however is a significant decline from the 103 000 grams sufficient for 17 000 hectares of tobacco that had been sold in the same corresponding period last season.

Farmers are currently observing the tobacco free period from 15 May to the 1st of June in line with Statutory Instrument 711 of 1979.

Tthe period has been stipulated to minimize the risk of pests and diseases spreading.
