The programme will see more than 100 families receiving a bull each with the aim of improving the quality of the breed in rural areas.

Member of the House of Assembly for Mhondoro-Mubaira, Cde Sylvester Nguni, said the move to handover the bulls is in line with government’s policy to improve the national herd.

Speaking at Nyamweda Shopping Centre, Cde Nguni said: “Our people in rural areas need to be empowered and this project is aimed at making sure that we improve the quality of cattle to ensure that farmers produce superior meat and milk.”

The beneficiaries of the programme hailed it saying it will go a long way in improving the quality of their breed.

“The move will boost our cattle, as you know most of the cattle in rural areas are small, so these heifers will go a long way in improving our breed … it will also help get more money when we sell our cattle,” said one villager.

So far, more than 50 families have benefited from the scheme and more families in other wards will also receive the bulls as part of efforts to improve the national herd and better the quality of the cattle.
