Organisers and sponsors of the 2018 Victoria Falls marathon say investigations into the claims by a female athlete that she was allegedly disqualified after winning the half marathon shows that the complainant did not cross the finish line and have described the incident as a failed attempt to dupe the organisers.

Social media was on Monday (yesterday) abuzz with solidarity messages after a facebook post alleging that Brenda Makonyere was allegedly disqualified after winning the female 21km half marathon.

Justice for Makonyere was the most popular comment as people sympathised with the young female athlete.

Information availed by the organisers, however, suggest that the Makonyere did not complete the race but instead a male athlete crossed the line holding the electronic marathon tag bearing the female athlete’s race number in what the organisers have described as a failed attempt to dupe the officials.

In a statement, the event’s major sponsor Econet Wireless Zimbabwe said it regrets that there appears to have been an attempt to defraud the marathon and expressed satisfaction that the organisers were quick to pinpoint what happened from the video evidence.
