Proposals have been put forward for the speedy implementation of the computerisation and integration of the transport management system to enhance accountability and boost revenue collections.
With a view to plug leakages, enhance efficiency and improve revenue collections government has been urged to expedite the computerisation and integration of entities such as Vehicle Examination Department (VED), Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA), Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) and the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).
Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Dr Joram Gumbo said the ministry welcomes all recommendations aimed at increasing the parastatals contribution to the fiscus.
As part of recommendations the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructure Development says government should consider the merger of ZINARA and VED as well as the commercialisation of VED.
Other key priority areas for the Ministry of Transport in 2018 include, creation of the Road Accident Fund, Beitbridge-Chirundu dualisation project and recapitalisation of National Railways of Zimbabwe.
