The Minister of State for Masvingo Province Cde Ezra Chadzamira says efforts are being made to ensure the expansion of Chiredzi General Hospital given that it is the only referral hospital catering for the whole district.

Despite it being the only referral hospital in Chiredzi district catering for more than 320 000 people, Chiredzi District Hospital is faced with a number of challenges chief among them being the need to de-congest the maternity wing.

Cde Chadzamira, when he visited the hospital, highlighted the urgent need to engage relevant stakeholders to build more structures and ensure obsolete equipment is replaced.

“After touring the institution I noticed there are a number of issues that need to be addressed. The maternity ward is overcrowded, there are limited beds against the population the hospital caters for. Some of the equipment is obsolete hence the need to be replaced. We will engage relevant stakeholders to address the situation,” he said.

The district medical officer Dr Brian Dhlandhlara also highlighted the need by the town council to ensure constant water supplies for both Chiredzi General Hospital and Chiredzi Polyclinic.

“We are excited by the visit by the Minister of State we have tabled our challenges especially with the maternity ward. The other crucial issue is ensuring constant water supplies, remember this is a hospital hence no room for water cuts,” he said.

The issue of access to healthcare facilities remains a challenge in Chiredzi district considering limited number of health institutions in the area especially in resettlement areas where they have to walk long distances.
