Drowning incidents have increased in the first quarter of the year by 70 percent from 125 last year to 213 cases this year.

ZRP National Spokesperson, Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said the increase in the drowning cases is a worrying development.

“There is need for the public to take appropriate action to protect their children especially after a realisation that most drowning cases involved children between zero to six years of age, followed by those between seven and 14 years,” she said.

Senior Assistant Commissioner Charamba added that more awareness campaigns are needed to arrest the continuously frightening situation.
