Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Minister, Dr Chris Mushohwe this Friday (today) sent off some 70 undergraduate and post graduate students who are going to study various engineering and technical degrees in the Russia under the Presidential and National Scholarship programme in the President’s office.
This is the first group of students to be send-off after the integration of the Presidential Scholarship Programme and other scholarships formerly administered by the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education.
The executive director of the Presidential and National Scholarships in the President’s office, Minister Mushohwe sent off the group of students and reminded them to work hard and always know why they are in the foreign country.
He said their patron and President Robert Mugabe has always had great passion for education for himself and his people no matter the circumstances.
Dr Mushohwe went down memory lane explaining how the President exuded this passion even when he was in prison from where he studied and earned a number of degrees and went on establish classes for fellow inmates and after independence he converted part of the Prime Minister’s resident into classrooms for some members of government to help them continue their education.
His teaching team included Drs Sekeramayi, Dzingai Mutumbuka, Charles Utete, Elijah Chanakira, Fay Chung and Ibbo Mandaza and Dr Mushowe as the coordinator.
Dr Mushohwe then went on to explain how President Mugabe came up with the idea of integrating the Presidential scholarships and those from the Ministry of Higher Education.
He urged the students to take advantage of Russia’s leading position of science and technology and engineering development and bring back that knowledge to industrialise Zimbabwe.
Dr Mushohwe warned them not spoil the good ties between the two countries through bad behaviour.
The students will be going to different universities throughout Russia and some of the areas of study are pharmacy, aircraft engineering, mining and aeronotics.
Exactly a week ago Dr Mushohwe sent off another group of students to China and this clearly demonstrates the President’s passion for education for his people.
