Portpher Dombojena won the Spar Gokwe 10km fun run held at the weekend while Valentine Mugoni scooped the top accolade in the ladies section.
From the onset, Dombojena who runs for the Nyaradzo Group was head to head with the Zimbabwe Prison Services’ Gilbert Mutandiro and it was down to the finish line to determine the winner of the inaugural Spar Gokwe fun run.
In the ladies category, Mugoni a cross border trader could not resist the US$150 first prize that was on offer and clad in jeans romped to victory.
In second place was Kudzai Vengesa who fizzled out in the dying stages of the race.
In the seniors, 55 year old Roy Mawoneke easily took home the first prize as his peers shied away from the race.
Spar Gokwe director, Mr Tinashe Mangisi as well as the towns chairperson, Councillor Esther Sengwa said the race is a way to give back to the community as well as promote the development of sport in the area.
After the race, 60 underprivileged members from the Gokwe community were presented with food hampers as part of proceeds from the race which attracted a field of 450 athletes.
