Various disused mines in the country have become potential death traps as illegal miners pounce on these mines in search of gold.
Mazowe Mine in Mashonaland Central which is managed by Metallon Group is currently under care and maintenance and is a potential death trap as illegal miners are going underground through unsanctioned shaft openings to gather ore.
The Ministry of Mines and Mining Development’s Deputy Minister, Cde Polite Kambamura urged illegal entrants to desist from such activities to avert the loss of lives.
“We urge members of the public to desist from entering mines which are not in operation as this poses a huge death risk. In addition there is no ventilation and safety underground so there is potential danger of suffocating,” Cde Kambamura said.
Due to weak support structures, mines have collapsed killing miners in the process with others suffocating due to lack of adequate ventilation facilities.
The government is now working on trying to prevent any future tragedies like the Battlefields Mine disaster which was one of the biggest mining tragedies to befall the country earlier this year, claiming dozens of lives.
