Diabetes cases are on the rise with revelations showing that deaths related to the disease have surpassed those related to HIV and AIDS, hence the need for government intervention to contain the pandemic.

The disease continues to emerge as a key threat to health delivery goals with statistics showing more than 10 % of the population is diabetic and half of them are not aware of their condition due to lack of testing and awareness campaigns.

Bad eating habits and sedentary lifestyles are the main causes of diabetes and the Zimbabwe Diabetes Association is calling for government intervention through increased awareness and mobilisation of resources to ensure that drugs for disease become affordable.

Aapproximately 75 000 Zimbabweans are dying from diabetes mellitus complications every year and according to International Diabetes Federation, the number of diabetic patients is likely to double by 2030 due to lack of awareness and poor eating habits.
