The government says regulatory authorities are major culprits in the destruction of wetlands as they have parceled out land for development, population growth and urbanisation on wetlands in direct contradiction of the law.

Government said it is greatly concerned by the way regulatory authorities continue to parcel out land to build houses on wetlands which are the key source of water for the city.

Speaking during a workshop on wetlands, director in the office of the Minister of State for Harare Metropolitan Province Mr Jabulani Ndebele said they are going to engage stakeholders to step up awareness campaigns on the vulnerability of wetlands which should used sustainably .

EMA principal research officer Mr Ntandokamlimu Nondo said the workshop sought to create a meeting of minds on how best wetlands can be managed.

Participants noted there’s need for guidelines that deal with property developers and other stakeholders towards protecting wetlands.

The workshop ran under theme, “No Future for Harare without Wetlands”.
