Embarking on the 5km journey five to six days a week and taking up to two hours to her work station has become Ruth Makusha’s lifestyle.

As a single mother of three, Makusha has no option but to fend for her family after her husband deserted them.

The 25 year old is one of many women from Takaendesa village in Chirumanzu who are benefitting from the District Development Fund (DDF)’s Public Works Programme, which is also empowering youths.

In Chirumhanzu, the DDF is constructing the Nyamatikiti Bridge, employing several locals.

Makusha has had to strengthen up as she has been working under strenuous construction conditions that force her to work twice as much a woman should.

“I am happy that DDF is empowering lots of people here including my grandchild,” said Elias Sami, Makusha’s grandfather.

DDF Mvuma District Roads Supervisor Mrs Regina Mudzingwa commended the work being done by the locals, especially women, adding that they are employing 26 general hand workers at the Nyamatikiti Bridge project.
