The 62nd session on the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) conference has officially opened in New York, US, amid calls to empower women and girls who live in rural areas.

The First Lady, Cde Auxillia Mnangagwa is among dignitaries who are attending this important conference that seeks to come up with ways to uplift women.

Officially opening the conference, the incoming CSW Chairperson, Her Excellency Geraldine Nason cited increased political participation by women and their empowerment as key in achieving gender balance.

Speakers at the conference agreed that there is urgent need to address gender discrimination against women and the need to empower women who live in rural areas.

Hundreds of women organisations, government officials from United Nations (UN) member countries are in attendance.

The Minister of Women and Youth Affairs Cde Sithembiso Nyoni, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Cde Marble Chinomona, Manicaland Minister of State Cde Monica Mutsvangwa and legislator Ms Paurina Mupariwa are part of the Zimbabwean delegation attending the conference.
