zim floods.jpgThe Civil Protection Unit says it is prepared to deal with any floods that might occur in the country’s low lying areas this rainy season.

While the incessant rains that are being experienced in most parts of the country are a blessing to farmers, those in the low lying areas are now living in fear of floods due to rising water levels.

The CPU says those in areas like Middle Sabi, Muzarabani, Lupane, Chidodo and Beitbridge are being advised to be on guard as floods might occur if rains continue.

CPU Director, Mr. Madzudzo Pawadyira said so far the situation is under control as they have not received any reports of flooding, but in the event that floods occur, teams from his unit are on standby and with the assistance of the police Sub-Aqua team, the situation will be manageable.

He said: “We are closely monitoring the Kariba Dam wall to ensure its water holding capacity is not exceeded.”

Mr. Pawadyira said in the event that the Kariba Dam swells, the Zambezi River Authority will not hesitate to open the flood gates.

Last year during the rainy season people and animals were left marooned on islands after floods swept across the low lying areas in Zimbabwe such as the Zambezi Valley.
