Coventry is also a five-time African Swimmer of Year & three-time Zimbabwe Sportsperson of The Year.

The record-breaking swimming icon took part in the 400 and 200metres freestyle, 200 and 100metres backstroke as well as the 200 and 100metres individual medley and left most of the competition for dead sometimes winning by almost a minute.

In an interview with ZBC News, Coventry said she felt good to compete in Zimbabwe again after an absence of more than 10 years.

Other high-profile swimmers who competed in the gala include 2011 Junior Sportswoman of the Year and All-Africa Games bronze medallist Samantha Welch, who was also part of the Zimbabwe relay team that won three silvers at the continental games, and 2011 Junior Sportsman of the Year James Lawson.

The short course gala at Gateway Primary School was attended by a small appreciative crowd who cheered the world champion on.

Zimbabwean swimmers are battling to secure qualification times for forthcoming regional galas and the South African senior regional championships scheduled for April.
