About 4 000 tonnes of cotton seed and machinery valued at over 1.5 million have been destroyed by fire at a Chegutu firm, Agri Value Chain.
The destroyed cotton seed was part of the raw material kept for crude oil processing by the firm which produces up to 2 million litres monthly.
Agri Value Chain Chairperson, Mr Pradyumn Kumal Ganediwal said the destroyed cotton seed had the potential to produce about 800 000 litres of crude oil.
“The cotton seed destroyed was on six stakes, and we lost about 4 000 tonnes. With that, we could produce 800 000 litres of crude oil,” he said.
Chegutu Legislator, Cde Dexter Nduna described the disaster as a drawback to economic development.
“Agri Value Chain is an end to end value chain company and as you may be aware, this town is in the economic processing zone, for which this company is a major player. This development derails the efforts we are making to ensure the successful implementation of the process,’’ said Cde Nduna.
Meanwhile, Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.
