Thousands of farmers who ventured into cotton are poised to fetch lucrative prices of 55 cents per kg if they pick their cotton in a way that produces the best grade.
A crop assessment by the Cotton Company of Zimbabwe (COTTCO) revealed that the bulk of the cotton crop produced under the Presidential Inputs Scheme has reached ripening stage with some farmers in Gokwe now picking their white gold.
The government has already indicated that farmers who produce the best quality will get not less than 55 cents per kg for their crop.
COTTCO, which has been given the mandate to buy cotton sponsored by the state, assured farmers that adequate funds will be available to pay the producer price set to be announced soon.
The crop assessment shows that the Presidential Inputs Scheme has managed to resuscitate cotton production in all the cotton greenbelts of Gokwe, Muzarabani, Mt Darwin, Chiredzi and others.
Over 110 000 tonnes of cotton are expected this season, up from 28 000 tonnes produced last year.
