The government through the Cotton Company of Zimbabwe is targeting to provide cotton inputs enough for a hectare to 160 000 households in Matabeleland North Province through the Presidential Inputs Scheme as efforts are underway to improve the production of the white gold in the country.
The production of cotton in Matabeleland North Province which began in 2016 through the Presidential Well Wishers Agricultural Programme is fast gaining momentum with one farmer in Tsholotsho Mr Biggy Nyoni targeting at least 60 bales of the white gold in the 2016-17 agricultural season.
Officiating during a programme to launch the distribution of cotton inputs under the Presidential Well Wishers Agricultural Programme at Dibutibu Shopping Centre in Tsholotsho, Matabeleland North Minister of State for Provincial Affairs, Ambassador Cain Mathema said the new dispensation has shown its commitment to see an improvement in the agricultural sector through timely distribution of inputs.
Cottco Managing Director Mr Pious Manamike said his organisation is now targeting all the dry regions as it seeks to increase the production of cotton in the country.
Under the Presidential Well Wishers Agricultural Programme, every household targeted for cotton production is set to get 20 kgs seed, two bags of basal dressing fertiliser, one bag of top dressing, one knapsack sprayer and an assortment of agrochemicals for pest control enough to cover a hectare of land.
