Gwanda regional magistrate, Mr Mark Dzira has sentenced two Bulawayo men to 10 years imprisonment each for stealing copper cables belonging to TelOne in Esigodini.

Okay Moyo (23) and Begin Ngwenya (26) both were convicted on their own plea of guilty for vandalising and removing 300 metres of overhead telecommunication lines belonging to TelOne.

The cables are worth $1500.

Prosecuting, Mr Mncedisi Dube said the two teamed up on the 6th of December 2017 to steal the telecommunication line in Esigodini.

Unbeknown to the copper thieves, the complainant Murivamwe Matezve, who is employed by TelOne at Esigodini, heard an alarm which signaled that there was a cut along the communication lines.

He teamed up with the police to where the alarm had indicated the disconnection.

Upon arrival they saw the duo rolling the cables and a chase of the criminals ensued.

The police managed to catch one the thieves who led them to the other suspect who was later arrested at Mzilikazi rank.

In their mitigation, Ncube said he committed the crime to raise money to visit his rural home in Tsholotsho, while Ngwenya said he was desperate for money to buy medication for his ill father.

The communication lines were recovered.
