The government has raised concern over increasing cases of child abuse, saying it will continue working towards strengthening child protection systems through collaborating with the civil society organisations and the media.

Speaking at the Zimbabwe National Council for the Welfare of Children’s 50th anniversary and awards dinner, the Minister of Labour and Social Welfare, Cde Petronella Kagonye said children are everyone’s responsibility and the future of the nation, hence the need to protect them.

“We are working on addressing this challenge through aligning the Children’s Act and the Marriage Act to the new constitution, a process which is now near completion.

Director for the Zimbabwe National Council for the Welfare of Children, Reverend Taylor Nyanhete encouraged the media to give more prominence to children’s rights issues in their news agenda.

During the awards ceremony, ZBC dominated with its radio stations: SFM, Radio Zimbabwe, and Power FM, and ZBC TV producers, ZBC News and Current Affairs reporters and presenters being recognised for championing children’s rights.
