Command agriculture has been commended for empowering smallholder farmers in increasing productivity.

Mr Farai Chimombe, a Marondera farmer who benefitted from the command agriculture programme in 2017, has managed to grow his self financed wheat during the 2018 season using proceeds from the previous season.

Mr Chimombe said command agriculture has empowered a lot of farmers and urged those who would have benefitted to self finance themselves so that the program can benefit others.

“I benefitted from command agriculture last season and this has enabled me to self finance my winter wheat crop this season. I urge other farmers to do the same so that other farmers also benefit,” he said.

He also appealed for less expensive and user friendly centre pivots as the ones available on the local market are too big and expensive for small holder farmers.

Mr Chimombe has 52 hectares of winter wheat of which 25 is ready for harvesting, while the remainder is at soft dough stage.
