Agro-dealers from Matabeleland North province are meeting in Bulawayo under the COMESA Regional Agro-inputs Programme.

The COMESA programme aims at linking small holder farmers with suppliers of inputs as well as financial institutions for a consolidated approach to food security in the region.

Speaking on behalf of the implementing agency for COMESA, the African Centre for Fertiliser Development Regional Co-ordinator, Mr Midway Bhunu said his organisation wants to capacitate small holder farmers by availing food and chemicals to vulnerable farmers in communal and resettlement areas in Zimbabwe.

The National Communications Manager for COMESA, Mr Retlaw Matorwa said the training will also link them with people who can avail credit lines.

He added that storage of seed as well as knowledge on the handling of chemicals, is key to sustainable farming as poor handling of seed can affect quality.

Participants who included Acting Chief Siyansali of Binga said adequate and timeous supply of seed remains key to national food security.
