The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) has expressed optimism for a free and credible election given the participation of a pool of regional and international observers in the harmonised elections scheduled for this Monday.
The 19 member delegation officially announced its presence for the harmonised elections, joining a pool of other observer missions already deployed in and across the country.
Head of COMESA Election Observer Mission to Zimbabwe Ambassador Ashraf Gamal Rashed hinted towards the possibility of a democratic process in the forthcoming elections as Zimbabwe has moved from the previous position that limited scrutiny and participation of some observer teams especially the European.
The team carries from its pre-election meetings in the country held from the 22nd to the 28th of May which served as a precursor to assessing the country’s preparedness to ensuring the necessary conditions prevailed for the conducting of credible and peaceful elections.
The COMESA observer team joins other regional organs already stationed in the country such as SADC and AU along with international bodies such as the Commonwealth and the EU.
