The International Day of Co-operatives is an annual event which is aimed at drawing attention to the contribution of the co-operative movement in resolving global social and economic issues.

The initiative also aims to strengthen partnerships between the international co-operative movement and other actors such as government.

Small and Medium Enterprises and Co-operative Development Minister, Cde Sithembiso Nyoni said co-operatives have a key role in improving socio-economic conditions for Zimbabweans.

“Co-operatives are a very viable vehicle for socio-economic enhancement. There are very important because gone are the days when business was separated from the social sector,” said Cde Nyoni.

The theme for this year’s International Day of Co-operatives is: “Youth the future of co-operative enterprise” – highlighting how the co-operative model of enterprise can be used to empower youths.

Zimbabwe now has over 4 600 co-operatives covering sectors such as housing, agriculture, manufacturing, savings and credit, art and craft, as well as fishing and mining.
