A cleansing ceremony for artisanal miners who were reportedly trapped to death at Eldorado Mine outside Chinhoyi has been conducted, with the Gushungo clan leading ceremony.

The ceremony was ostensibly meant to appease the spirits of artisanal miners who died at the gold rich mine while conducting illegal mining operations at the then dysfunctional entity.

The Gushungo clan led by Chief Chidziva conducted the ceremony which was punctuated by food and drinks after the slaughter of a beast and sheep.

Legal representative of Eldorado Mine, Mr Chenjerai Daitai said the owners of the company are enthused at the prospects of resuming operations.

Zvimba North legislator, Cde Marian Chombo called on the mine to honour its social responsibility obligations as it resumes operations.

Last year, between 12 and 14 miners were reportedly trapped at Eldorado Mine and efforts to retrieve their bodies were in vain as mining experts concluded that the scene of the accident posed a danger to rescuers.

The mine is however set to resume formal operations this coming Tuesday.
