The Civil Protection Department says it is on high alert for any eventualities in the face of the heavy rains currently being experience in the country.

The department is however concerned with the rising cases of people drowning, which stands at 49 since October 2017.

Director in the department, Mr Nathan Nkomo told the ZBC News that seven deaths have also been recorded due to lightning.

According to the department’s catalogue on rainfall incidents, 512 homesteads have been damaged while 230 hectares of maize and 70 hectares of tobacco were destroyed by incessant rains.
