The church has been urged to provide adequate counselling to young couples in order to reduce the rates of divorce in the country.

A recently held inter-faith dialogue organised by the World Federation of World Peace and Unification saw church leaders, congregants and government officials meeting to find out how best to safeguard marriages.

Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Minister Women Affairs, Gender and Community Development, Cde Abigail Damasane said many marriages are hitting the rocks as a result of couples not receiving proper counselling regarding the union of marriage.

“The family unit must always be protected and couples must rely on Biblical teachings to preserve the marriage institution. This also means a huge task on the church to educate youths on the sanctity of marriage,” she said.

Statistics show that over 100 divorce cases are being handled by the High Court in Harare alone monthly, painting a frightening picture on the ripple effects that this will create on society as a whole.
