ZIFA President, Phillip Chiyangwa says his donation of football kits to the uniformed forces and women football clubs is not a political gimmick but a grassroot development programme with assistance from the world football governing body, FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Chiyangwa said the programme is part of a football grassroot development programme he intends to take countrywide following years of bad leadership which saw Zimbabwe lose out development assistance from FIFA and CAF.
In an interview with the ZBC News, after donating an assortment of football kit that included footballs, shinpads, goalkeepers’ gloves and boots to the Zimbabwe Republic Police at his offices in the capital, Chiyangwa said he is trying to have football played everywhere and playing catch with other countries.
ZRP Commissioner, Mekiah Tanyanyiwa, who is also the chairman of the ZRP Sport Association, could not hide his excitement, saying with Chiyangwa’s vision and leadership, sport is headed for success.
Chiyangwa immediately left for Egypt to source for more assistance from the CAF headquarters and FIFA, who provide development assistance both in cash and kind to member associations for the various affiliates who include women soccer, junior soccer development and five-a-side football teams, among others .
