The Chitungwiza Municipality yesterday hosted the Olympic Day celebrations, whose essence is to involve communities in the Olympic movement.
The event, which was held for the second time in the country, but the first during the new millennium, received an overwhelming turnout as participants took part in diverse sporting disciplines among them soccer, netball, volleyball, wrestling, boxing, handball, tug of war and athletics.
Zimbabwe Olympic Committee president, Admire Masenda summed up the turnout as extraordinary.
â€œThis yearâ€™s Olympic day celebrations have been exceptional in the sense that weâ€™ve witnessed a significant increase in participants.
â€œA large number of national sport associations have come and their level of participation has been commendable,â€ said Masenda.
Zimbabwe Olympic Committee general manager, Stanley Mutoya applauded the Chitungwiza community for their overwhelming turnout and added that the essence of the Olympic Day is to involve communities on the Olympic movement.
The Guest of Honour and also the Chitungwiza Municipality mayor, Alderman Phillemon Chipiyo said the Olympic Day is an important event that is free to all members of the community irrespective of gender, ability and any other real or perceived barriers.
He also paid tribute to the Zimbabwe Olympic committee for successfully organizing the event since 1987.
â€œWe wish to congratulate the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee for successfully hosting the Olympic Day for the past 23 years in spite of the economic challenges that have been affecting us, â€œsaid Alderman Chipiyo.
In this yearâ€™s commemorations, focus was primarily on young people ahead of the inaugural edition of the youth Olympic Games to be hosted by Singapore in August.
