Those honoured say the recognition of their artistic contribution will encourage young and aspiring artists to take the arts seriously as it can be a dependable source of income.

The artists were honoured for their achievements and contribution to the arts and the Chitungwiza community.

Music icon, Cephas Mashakada won the Music Personality Award and actor, Lawrence Simbarashe scooped the Arts and Culture Promotion Award.

Speaking after receiving his award, Mashakada said the recognition and honour bestowed upon him by the Chitungwiza Hall of Fame, was befitting and would encourage aspiring and existing artists to take the industry seriously.

In a speech read on his behalf by an official in his Ministry, Mrs Mercy Mtombeni, Minister of Media, Information and Publicity, Cde Webster Shamu praised the Chitungwiza business community for honouring the artists, saying the gesture showed how serious and important the arts industry is.

“The Chitungwiza community has shown their seriousness to the growth of the town and country at large. These awards are a step in the right direction to the growth of arts as the artists have shown their commitment to the industry through their contribution,” said Minister Shamu.

Also honoured was the late popular musician System Tazvida, who scooped the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Chitungwiza Hall of Fame is a partnership between the artists and the corporate sector and is aimed at honouring artists who hail from the town for their contribution to the growth of arts.
