A storm is brewing in Chitungwiza with some residents challenging the council’s decision to convert a recreational space into residential stands.
Some Chitungwiza residents allege that the decision by the local authority to convert a piece of land reserved for recreation into residential stands is erroneous as it will leave their children without sport facilities and encourage them to deal in drugs and engage in wanton behaviour.
The residents through the Harare Province Education, Arts, Sport and Culture Foundation, have since petitioned the council to reconsider its decision and have vowed to take council to task.
“How can the council do this? These recreational pieces of land were left for a purpose, that is for recreation simply, and they are not for residential purposes,†fumed one resident.
According to the Secretary General for The Harare Metropolitan Province Arts, Sport and Culture Foundation, Cde Last Mbizvo, the Chitungwiza Town Council should have consulted the residents first before making a decision, as the land in question has benefitted the youth in terms of promoting behavioural change through sport.
It is not the first time residents of the town have been up in arms with town authorities over issues of this nature and at one time they staged a demonstration after a piece of land designated for a crèche was corruptly issued a councillor.
Efforts to get a comment from the Town Clerk were fruitless as the offices were locked for the weekend while his mobile phone was unreachable.
