Chinhoyi residents have overwhelmingly backed the proposals to amend the constitution saying President Robert Mugabe must be given powers to appoint the chief justice, his deputy and the judge president.

The Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Portfolio Committee expressed satisfaction with the manner in which the hearings were conducted in the Mashonaland West provincial capital.

As the Chief Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku retires at the end of this month, Deputy Chief Justice Luke Malaba is set to take over in an acting capacity until a substantive judge is appointed.

It is still not clear if the candidate will be appointed while the Constitutional Amendment Bill Number One is yet to be finalised.
