China says it will assist in the reconstruction of schools and hospitals destroyed by Cyclone Idai and drill 500 boreholes across the country.

Infrastructure is one of the key enablers of the economy and as such, China was it fit to assist the country in that area.

Addressing students at the Zimbabwe Staff College this Tuesday, the Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Guo Shaochun said his country is committed to implementing long term projects for economic recovery.

“We want to take our relations to greater heights. We are going to help in the reconstruction of schools and hospitals in areas affected by Cyclone Idai. China will also drill 500 boreholes for the Zimbabwean people. Already, the Victoria Falls Airport project has already started bearing fruit as the country has recorded about 2.6 million tourist arrivals,” he said.

China has already proved to be a social, political and economic friend of Zimbabwe.

The Kariba South Hydro Power Expansion project undertaken by the Chinese is said to have reduced the electricity import bill by 50 percent.

Apart from infrastructure projects, China has also sent doctors to support the health delivery system in Zimbabwe.
