More than 47 children born with cleft lip and palate deformities have undergone surgery under the Alliance For Smiles Programme currently underway at Chitungwiza Central Hospital.The 10 day programme will run until the 23rd of this month and is expected to see more than 75 children from all the provinces in the country with cleft lip or palates and other facial disfigures undergoing free reconstructive surgery.
Parents whose children were operated could not hide their joy.
Alliance For Smiles Programme Coordinator, Barbara Fischer said her organisation aims to bring relief to many children who can not afford the required fees.
Guest of Honour at the cleft lip and palate camp launch, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare, Retired Brigadier Dr Gerald Gwinji commended Rotary International and Chitungwiza Rotary Club for affording disadvantaged children an opportunity to lead healthy lifestyles.
The operations are an initiative of the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare, Chitungwiza Hospital and Rotary International Zimbabwe.
A group of 10 American surgeons are conducting the free corrective surgeries.
