handcuffs.jpgA 35 year old Mt Hampden woman has been arrested on charges of kidnapping a six week old baby.

The woman, Moreblessing Mangwende , who is alleged to have lied to her husband that she was pregnant, allegedly kidnapped the child at Venice Mine in Kadoma.

Harare province police spokesperson Inspector, James Sabau, said Mangwende was arrested following a tip off from the public who saw her moving around with the child.



Meanwhile, efforts are being made to reunite the child with the mother and the suspect will be transferred to Kadoma for trial.

Cases of child kidnapping have been on the increase of late with police confirming that on 16 June, a two months old baby was kidnapped in Whitecliff near Harare and was later found in Norton.

Another two and half year old child was kidnapped on the 26th of June in Kuwadzana extension by a 22 year old Mbare woman Tatenda Muchenje.

Child kidnapping is a serious offence and is regarded as serious violence of international conventions on the rights of a child.

Under the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act if convicted the offence can attract a sentence of up to 25 years imprisonment.
