The 2018 Chibuku Super Cup draw was held in Harare this afternoon with 17 teams after Chicken Inn were suspended for walking out during the match against Yadah in last year’s edition.
Two of the bottom teams at the halfway stage of the Premier Soccer League during matchday 17 –Chapungu and Mutare City Rovers will start their campaign at the preliminary stage on 8th of September and the winner will join the first round proper on the weekend of 22nd and 23rd of September.
The top eight teams were seeded and will play their first round matches at home.
Chibuku General Manager Tichafa Rinomhota said the tournament has created lasting bonds of friendship and brotherhood over the years through great football in a partnership with a great brand.
PSL Chief Executive Officer Kennedy Ndebele said the Chibuku Super Cup has become the PSL premier cup competition and warned clubs to respect the rules and regulations governing the tournament to ensure continuity.
In the first round of the 2018 tournament, FC Platinum will face either Chapungu or Mutare City Rovers, Ngezi Platinum Stars has a date with Herentals, Caps United were pitted against ZPC Kariba, Highlanders play Yadah, Black Rhinos will come up against Nichrut and Dynamos has Bulawayo Chiefs, while Triangle host Shabanie Mine.
The tournament was re-launched in 2014 and won by FC Platinum while Harare City won the tournament twice in 2015 and 2017 and Ngezi Platinum in 2016.
Harare City who were demoted last season and returned to the PSL after acquiring the franchise of defunct How Mine turned down the opportunity of competing in the CAF Confederations Cup tournament citing financial challenges.
William Manondo is the leading goal-scorer in the competition with 9 goals while total of 114 goals have been scored since 2014.
Winner of the $400 000 tournament will represent the country in the Confederation of African football tournament.
