The Minister of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development, Dr Joseph Made says farming inputs for the forthcoming agricultural season are in abundance despite the lack of funding from the Ministry of Finance which has left farmers having to rely on contract farming.
Dr Made said the proposed funding by the Minister of Finance, Mr Tendai Biti have not been forthcoming, leaving farmers in the predicament of failure to access farming inputs on time ahead of the new farming season.
However, farmers will have to get solace from assurances made by other stakeholders in releasing farming inputs on credit with one of the local contractors, NELMA Holdings Chairman, Mr Nelson Mahupete praising input producing companies and banks for adhering to the government’s call for private and public partnerships.
Since the RBZ was stripped of its quasi-fiscal policies by the inclusive government, the mechanisation programme died a natural death.
Commercial farmers have not received farming inputs as Minister Tendai Biti is not adequately supporting agriculture.
