The late Governor and Resident Minister of Harare Metropolitan Province, Cde David Karimanzira, has been declared a national hero following an Extra-Ordinary Zanu PFÂ Politburo meetingÂ held this Thursday.
The Secretary for Administration, Cde Didymus Mutasa said it was a unanimous decision by Politburo members to accord him national hero status.
Meanwhile, Cde Mutasa said the party is currently consulting the family on burial arrangements, which he said could be set for this weekend or next Monday.
A personal friend and medical doctor, Cde David Parirenyatwa said the late Governor was hypertensive and diabetic which could have led to his death.
Dr Parirenyatwa said despite Cde Karimanziraâ€™s failing health, he remained a committed and dedicated cadre.
Zanu PF Politburo members said the sudden death of Cde Karimanzira is a blow to the party, his family and the country at large.
The news of the death of Cde Karimanzira has left his colleagues in the partyâ€™s highest decision making body, the Politburo shell-shocked.
A number of them gathered at West End hospital, trying to come to terms with the tragic loss of the Secretary of Finance in the party.
Zanu PF Secretary for Information and Publicity, Cde Rugare Gumbo said he was sitting right next to Cde Karimanzira during Wednesdaysâ€™ extra-Ordinary Politburo meeting in Harare and he looked well.
Cde Olivia Muchena, who is also a Politburo Member, said while Cde Karimanzira was known to be diabetic, his sudden death has nonetheless dealt a heavy blow to the party.
Another Politburo Member, Cde Tendai Savanhu said Cde Karimanzira was a tried and tested cadre of the party who was very reliable and consistent.
Zanu PF Harare Provincial Chairman,Â Ambassador Amos Midzi described Cde Karimanzira as a humble and committed leader who did not mince his words when he was at the University of Rhodesia where he challenged the white colonial establishment which saw him and several others being kicked out of the institution.
Cde Karimanzira attended the Geneva, Malta and Lancaster House conferences as a resource person of the negotiators.
He participated in collecting clothes and other consumables for the liberation fighters and was active in educating the British public on the justice of the Zimbabwe liberation struggle.
Zanu PF Bulawayo province has expressed shock at the sudden death of Cde Karimanzira who died at the age of 64.
In his message of condolence to the Karimanzira family, Zanu PF Bulawayo province Chairman, Cde Isaac Dakamela said the sudden death of Cde Karimanzira is a sad loss, not only to the family, but to Zanu-PF party and government.
He said his party will miss the services of a tried and tested leader, adding that it will not be easy to fill the gap he has left in the Zanu PF Politburo where he was the Secretary for Finance.
In a related development, the Zimbabwe Liberation War Collaborators Association (ZILIWACO) has described the death of Cde Karimanzira as a big loss to the revolutionary party,Â Zanu PF,Â the Karimanzira family andÂ the entire country.
In his message, ZILIWACO national chairman, Cde Pupurai Togarepi said Cde Karimanzira was a dedicated cadre wo was also principled and consistent.Â Â
Burial arrangements will be announced in due course.
