Former United States diplomat to Cuba, Wayne Smith, says the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and US-based exiles spent nearly half a century conspiring to do away with the late Cuban leader, Cde Fidel Castro.
Smith said apart from the exploding cigar plot to assassinate Cde Castro, there were 637 reported plots against his life.
Former bodyguard Fabian Escalante, who wrote a book on the subject and a TV documentary, also revealed that the outlandish projects included exploding seashells, a poisoned diving suit and poison pills hidden in face cream.
The Cuban leader himself once remarked that if surviving assassination attempts were an Olympic event, he could have won a gold medal.
Cde Castro who died on Friday, was prime minister of Cuba from 1959 to 1976 and then president fromÂÂÂ 1976 to 2008.
He was succeeded by his younger brother Cde Raul Castro who is the present Cuban president.
