Caps United began their group phase CAF Champions League campaign on a losing note after a 2-nil defeat at the hands of Zamalek yesterday evening at the Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria, Cairo.
Zamalek in the first half carved up several goal scoring chances but could not convert with a fine save by Edmore Sibanda keeping Makepekepe in the contest.
Caps United’s only meaningful attack came courtesy of Abbas Amidu after an effort from an acute angle.
After holding the hosts to a nil all stalemate at half time, the second half was a different story with Zamalek grabbing the opener courtesy of Bassem Mosri in the 55th minute.
Sibanda was denied by some fine goalkeeping after unleashing a stinging effort from a long range free kick.
Zamalek sealed the game as a contest seven minutes from time when a hesitant Sibanda allowed Nigeria’s Stanley Okawuchi to head home.
Ronald Chitiyo could have scored a consolation but the hosts held on for a 2-nil win.
