The government has implored the business sector to plough back into communities they operate in as a way of corporate social responsibility.
Local companies have been challenged to improve sustainable development and social equity through corporate social responsibility in line with the country’s economic blueprint ZIMASSET and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The call was made by the Minister of Industry and Commerce Minister Dr Mike Bimha at a charity ball hosted by a cement manufacture to raise funds for assisting underprivileged girls in Mabvuku/Tafara.
Lafarge Cement Zimbabwe chief executive officer Mrs Amal Tantawi said the company is undertaking the Shine/Simuka Upenye Programme to empower under privileged girls in the Mabvuku/Tafara community with life skills so that they are less vulnerable to the vices in society.
At least 100 girls and women have benefited from the various training initiatives under the programme, with some being contracted on a part time basis to carry out tasks for the cement maker so that they generate income.
