A call has been made for more awareness campaigns on diabetes especially to women as they have got higher chances of developing breast and cervical cancer if they are diabetic.

As the prevalence of diabetes continue to rise with statistics showing that 10 percent of the country’s population is diabetic, a call has been made for more awareness campaigns which encourages screening and good health lifestyles.

Speaking at the handover ceremony of laptops to diabetes clinics, president of Zimbabwe Diabetes Association Dr John Mangwiro said out of 10 percent people who are diabetic half of them do not know and women are at high risk.

In a speech read on his behalf by Harare Hospital chief executive officer Dr George Vera, the Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care Dr Aldrin Musiiwa said there is need for ICT equipment in hospitals to ensure data capturing on diabetes and enable effective communication.

Novartis Company which manufactures diabetes medication donated 5 laptops to different hospitals.

According to International Diabetes Federation the number of diabetic patients is likely to double by 2030 due to lack of awareness and poor eating habits.
